Background: On April 4, Russian aircraft were reported to have dropped over 300 pro-communist parachute troops only six miles north of Vang Vieng, the Laotian Government's main stronghold on the Vientiane-Luang Prabang road.

To counter this surprise action, the Government dropped a paratroop force of similar strength in the area the next day. Exclusive film shows the first batch flying from Luang Prabang in transport planes.

The rest of the force were flown in green helicopters that once belonged to the United States Marines. First reports suggested their attack took the rebel troops by surprise.

Supporting this drop of paratroops, Laotian Government troops were said to have made further progress Apr 6 along the road to Luang Prabang. This brought them into a position north of Muong Kassy, four to five kilometres beyond their original starting point.
