    INTERVIEWERS AND SMITH

QUESTION: "MR. SMITH, YOU DID SAY YESTERDAY IN AN INTERVIEW THAT THE TALKS HAD PROVED EVEN TOUGHER THAN THE DAY BEFORE. CAN YOU PLEASE TAKE THIS A LITTLE FURTHER FROM THAT STATEMENT?"

SMITH: "I'LL TRY TO TAKE YOU A LITTLE FURTHER, BUT I DON'T NECESSARILY BELIEVE THIS MEANS I CAN REPORT A PROGRESS. I WOULDN'T LIKE TO ACTUALLY SAY THAT WE'VE GONE INTO REVERSE, BUT IN ALL HONESTY CAN'T SAY THAT WE'VE MADE MUCH PROGRESS."

QUESTION: "YOUR SOLO LAST NIGHT, SIR, DID THEY GET ANYWHERE - YOU AND MR. WILSON?"

SMITH: "NO. I AGAIN IN ALL HONESTY MUST SAY THAT I DON'T THINK THAT WE MADE ANY PROGRESS THERE AGAIN. WE ARE CONTINUALLY TRYING TO IMPRESS UPON THESE PEOPLE THE FACT THAT I HAVE MADE BEFORE THAT WE ARE DEALING WITH PROBLEMS THAT AFFECT RHODESIAN'S VERY LIVES AND WE JUST CAN'T GIVE GROUND, WE BELIEVE, ON THESE BASIC FUNDAMENTALS AND I'VE MADE THE POINT AGAIN, WHICH I THINK IS WORTH REPEATING, THAT THE GREATEST GUARANTEE THAT THE OUTSIDE WORLD CAN HAVE IS THAT WE HAVE GO TO LIVE WITH THE DECISIONS WE MAKE AND THEREFORE IF WE MAKE THE WRONG DECISIONS WE ARE GOING TO SUFFER, BUT THIS DOESN'T APPLY TO ANYONE ELSE."

QUESTION: "SIR, WITHOUT GIVING ANYTHING AWAY, HAS MR. WILSON GIVEN WAY ON ANYTHING?"

SMITH: "NOT THAT I HAVE NOTICED AS YET, AND IF HE HAS I THINK 17'S BEEN INSIGNIFICANT. BUT WE'RE GOING ON AND I THINK THE TIME WILL HAVE TO COME WHEN WE EITHER HAVE A BREAKTHROUGH OR WE CONCEDE THAT IT DOESN'T LOOK AS THOUGH WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A BREAKTHROUGH, AND I'VE GOT A FEELING THAT BY TONIGHT WE SHOULD HAVE SOME INDICATION. I HOPE SO".

QUESTION: "WHEN YOU SAY MR. WILSON HAD GIVEN WAY ON SOME INSIGNIFICANT ONES, HAVE YOU GIVEN WAY ON ANYTHING, SIR?"

SMITH: "WELL, I THINK MY POINT WAS - IF HE HAS THEY ARE SO INSIGNIFICANT THAT THEY'RE BARELY DISCERNABLE. I WOULD HOPE THAT I HAVEN'T GIVEN WAY ON ANYTHING".
