Background: In celebration of Palm Sunday - April 10 - His Holiness Pope John 23rd was present at a solemn ceremony at the Basilica of Saint Paul, one of the four Basilicas in Rome.
During a solemn Mass in the Basilica, Pope John blessed palm branches - symbols of Peace - before they were distributed to the congregation.
After the Mass a Penitential Procession took place around the Basilica's cloisters. Adorned in beautiful garments, and carrying a palm branch, His Holiness was borne aloft on his ordinate palanquin as he participated. All members of the Sacred College of Cardinals present in Rome took part in the ceremony, along with numerous Bishops and other church dignitaries.
Palm Sunday, immediately preceding Easter Sunday, celebrates Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem mounted on an ass. As a symbol of his peaceful intent, the populace scattered the roadway with palm fronds. In memory of this event, Christians all over the world celebrate Palm Sunday by attending divine service and receiving palm fronds blessed by the clergy.
