Background: The Christian Democrat floor leader in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Signer Giulio Andreotti, told newsmen on Friday (February 5) that he had accepted a mandate to form a new government -- and that he would try to make it strong enough to last until the next scheduled general elections in May, 1973.

Earlier, the 53-year-old politician -- who in 1970 had a mandate to form a new government but filed -- was given the go-ahead to form Italy's 33rd post-World War Two government by President Giovanni Leone.

Reuters news agency reports that Italian politicians are giving Signor Andreotti "little chance" of making a government last much more than a few weeks.
