Background: The president of the International Olympic Committee, (I.O.C) Mr. Avery Brundage, attacked commercialism in the Olympic Committee, Games when he spoke to the executive Board of the International Sports Federation in Amsterdam on Saturday (9 May).
Mr. Brundage said the games were becoming too large and costly and had been made "an hypocrisy" by commercialism, He called for ice hockey, soccer, basketball and alpine skiing to be withdrawn from the Games.
The statement came at the start of a round of talks in Amsterdam which includes meetings of the IOC next week. Among subjects to be discussed is the site of the 1976 Olympic Games -- Los Angeles, Moscow and Montreal are competing for the honour. A demand by African nations to have South Africa expelled from the IOC because of racial discrimination in sport is also to be considered.
