Background: The first elections ever to take place in Morocco were under way in Rabat and Casablanca, May 29, as hundreds of thousands of people poured into polling stations to cast their vote. 11,000 polling stations were set up and more than four million were expected to vote for some ten thousand municipal representatives - in Casablanca 270,000 voted at 500 polling offices.

Organization of the local elections was by the Government of Premier Abdullah Ibrahim, just before its dismissal by King Mohammed V following a six-month Cabinet crisis. King Mohammed took direct charge of the Government, May 24, with his son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, as executive in hopes of achieving enough economic and political stability for a constitutional regime in two years' time.

In a radio broadcast, the King said that though he will head the Government as well as the throne, Prince Hassan would be Vice-Premier in charge of actually running the Government.
