Background: Archbishop Hilarion Capucci, head of the Greek Catholic Church in Jerusalem, was formally charged at a Jerusalem court yesterday (4 September) with smuggling arms on behalf of the Palestinian Guerrilla groups El-Fatah and Black September.

An appeal for bail by the 51-year-old Syrian-born prelate, who's been in custody since his arrest last month, was deferred until today when the judge rejected it because of the severity of the charges.

No date has yet been fixed for the trial, but it is expected to open within a couple of weeks. The Archbishop is also charged with membership of the Fatah Organisation, illegal in Israel, and with serving as its courier and paymaster on journeys to and from Lebanon.

The detailed charges allege that in April this year the Archbishop took three suitcases full of arms and explosives from Lebanon to Jerusalem, and that these were subsequently used for acts of sabotage in Jerusalem. A second charge alleges that the following month, the Archbishop drove a suitcase of explosives and detonators to Jerusalem, that he still had them at the time of his arrest and handed them over to the authorities. In the meantime, according to the charges, he made a third trip in July to collect more weapons, which found concealed in his car at the time of his arrest.

Also in court yesterday -- as a prosecution witness -- was one of the Archbishop's assistants, Father Butros Jarjuriya. Though he waved to the crowd at the courthouse in entering, he lashed out at photographers as he left the building.
