Background: JAPAN IS TO RESUME EXPLORATIONS IN THE ANTARCTIC DURING THE APPROACHING SOUTHERN SUMMER, AND A NEW ICEBREAKER, THE "FUJI", IS CURRENTLY BEING USED IN TRAINING VOYAGES IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN, NEAR JAPAN.

JAPAN WAS ONE OF ELEVEN NATIONS WHICH TOOK PART IN EXPLORATIONS IN THE ANTARCTIC IN 1956. BETWEEN 1956 AND 1961 SIX JAPANESE EXPEDITIONS VISITED THE ANTARCTIC, BUT SINCE THEN JAPANESE EXPLORATIONS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED.

SCIENTISTS AND OTHER PERSONNEL WHO WILL TAKE PART IN THE FORTHCOMING EXPEDITION ARE NOW MAKING PREPARATIONS.

THE "FUJI" WEIGHS 7,760 TONS, IS 100 METRES (328 FEET) LONG, 22 METRES (71 FEET) WIDE, AND HAS A DRAUGHT OF NEARLY 12 METRES (38 FEET).

SHE CARRIES A CREW OF 235, INCLUDING SCIENTISTS.

DURING THE EXPEDITION 20 SCIENTISTS WILL REMAIN IN THE ANTARCTIC FOR ABOUT ONE YEAR.

THE FUJI'S UP-TO-DATE EQUIPMENT INCLUDES THREE HELICOPTERS, RADIOS AND EQUIPMENT WHICH WILL REMOTELY CONTROL WEATHER BALLOONS AS THEY FLY AT HEIGHTS UP TO 30-THOUSAND METRES (90-THOUSAND FEET).

THE SHIP ALSO FEATURES FOUR CRANES TO LOAD AND UNLOAD EQUIPMENT AND CARGO.

THE "FUJI" WILL BE ABLE TO BREAK THROUGH PACK-ICE UP TO SIX METRES (ABOUT 20 FEET) THICK.
