Background: MEMBERS OF THE SEVENTH FIELD SQUADRON, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS, STATIONED IN SABAH (NORTH BORNEO), ARE CONSTRUCTING MILITARY AIRSTRIPS, BRIDGES AND ROADS AS PART OF AUSTRALIA'S AID TO MALAYSIA. THEY HAVE SET UP A CAMP IN KUAMUT, ABOUT 200 MILES SOUTH OF SANDAKAN, THE LARGEST TOWN AND THEIR MEDICAL UNIT IS DISTRIBUTING MEDICINES TO THE NATIVES.

RECENTLY, TWO MEMBERS OF THE UNIT - CAPTAIN ADRIAN GROESSLER AND CORPORAL NIGEL FITZGIBBON, BOTH OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA, PACKED THEIR KITBAGS FULL OF VITAMINS PILLS AND OTHER MEDICINES FOR EXTERNAL APPLICATION AND MOTORED UP THE KINABATANGAN RIVER TO A KADAZAN VILLAGE FOR DISTRIBUTION.

BEFORE THE ENGINEERS ARRIVED IN KUAMUT LAST MAY FROM BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND, THE KADAZANS WERE SOLELY DEPENDENT ON MEDICAL CARE FROM VISITS MADE BY PRIVATE DOCTORS AND THEIR OWN 'WITCH' DOCTORS.

THE ARMY MEDICAL UNIT, HEADED BY CAPTAIN ADRIAN GROESSLER, NOW MAKES REGULAR VISITS TO VILLAGES IN KUAMUT. A KADAZAN LONGHOUSE HAS BEEN TURNED INTO A MEDICAL CENTRE WHERE THE SICK COME FOR TREATMENT.

THE VILLAGERS WERE AT FIRST SHY AND NERVOUS OF THE UNIT ORDERLIES. BUT AFTER A WHILE, THEY GOT TO KNOW THE ORDERLIES BETTER AND NOW HAS PLACED THEIR TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN THEM.
