PERES: "We are rather satisfied with the result of the election in the Histadrut. We feel that the potential is there for the alignment to win a strong enough portion of the vote to being the future government for Israel in the tenth Knesset. As a democratic party, we have to go through some of the processes of elections and decision making and I've expressed my hope that during the month of April, we shall be able to form the list of candidates for the tenth parliament on behalf of the alignment. Accordingly, I'm going to suggest to the party that Mr. Abba Eban, one of the most brilliant diplomats in our time, and also an orator, a statesman, will serve as our candidate for the Foreign Minister.



"I'm going to recommend that Hayim Bar Lev will be the candidate for the Minister of Defence; one of the most outstanding leaders in the domain of security, of military strategy; a man that has shown judgement and courage in the most difficult period.



"I'm very glad that Professor Ben-Shachar agreed to serve as our candidate for the Minister of Finance."

Background: INTRODUCTION: Israel's opposition leader, Shimon Peres, named his candidates on Thursday (9 April) for key ministerial posts if the Labour Party recaptures power in the country's general elections on 30 June. The day before, the Labour Party celebrated a significant victory in Tuesday's elections for the powerful Histadrut Labour Federation. While Labour's win over the rival Likud bloc led by Prime Minister Menachem Begin was extensive -- 64 percent against 25 percent -- Labour leader say the June election is a different contest, and that there's no cause for over-confidence. Mr. Peres made no mention of former Prime Minister Yitshak Rabin when he announced his proposed senior ministry.
