Background: Villagers in the southern Israelitownship of Beit Shean took gruesome revenge ont eh bodies of Palestinian guerrillas after a commando raid on Tuesday (19 November).

Conflicting reports said Israeli troops killed either three or four Arab terrorists who had shot their way into an apartment building. The terrorists killed at least three Israeli women in their pre-dawn raid.

After Israeli troops had killed the guerrillas, angry townspeople, many of them from North Africa, called for revenge.

Some of them forced their way into the apartment block and threw at least two dead terrorists out of the window.

People below then set fire to the bodies. Many women became ill watching the spectacle, while others spat on the ashes.

Finally, police and troops broke up the crowd, and the blackened remains of the raiders were loaded into a car and removed.

Israeli authorities said the guerrillas carried leaflets demanding the release by Israel of 14 political prisoners.
