Background: marco pannella - a leading member of the italian radical party - has now gone without food or water for more than 60 hours (as I write at 1700 cet wed). this morning he explained to journalists the reasons for his protest. The radical party led the campaign for divorce and abortion referenda. when rai tv drew up their plans for the abortion referendum (which will now not take place owing to general elections) the radicals were to be given no time at all whereas tiny parliamentary parties with no opinions on the subject were to be allocated tv time. The radical party, which is unrepresented in parliament, began its protest vis a vis the abortion referendum, but has now switched its attention to the upcoming elections, demanding (with the support of other non-parliamentary left wing parties) tv time to put their case. Pannella has pledged to hunger-strike until death if rai do not meet his demands.
