Background: Scottish adventurer Chay Blyth had a gala send-off from Hamble in hampshire on Sunday (18 October) at the start of his attempt on a round-the-world voyage east-to-west, against the prevailing winds.

Thirty year-old Blyth is making the attempt along in the all-steel yacht "British Steel".

Two years ago, Blyth abandoned an attempt on the easier West-to-east route because of the inadequacy of his boat. The result of that experience was his new steel ketch, which the state-owned British Steel Corporation had built for about 30,000 pounds sterling.

Blyth will try to steer an "uphill" course round the globe, battling with headwinds and current all the way. The winds could increase a planned 30,000-mile (48,000 Km) voyage to almost 40,000-miles (64,000 Kms) with repeated tacking.

A squadron of 250 small yachts, motor boats and dinghies saluted the adventurer as he left by escorting him out of harbour. Well-wishers draped "British Steel" with the slogan "Good Luck Chay".

Chay Blyth rowed the Atlantic in 1966 with fellow-Briton John Ridgeway. He calls his latest challenge "an exercise in survival", and is apprehensive about the long haul between the Cape of Good Hope and New Zealand, the stretch he expects to be the most difficult.
