Background: Brazilians are preparing for one of the world's most famous festivals--the Rio de Janeiro carnival. The week-long celebration, starting in late February, is centered on programme of traditional dancing. To make sure of its success, members of the Portela Samba school, one of the most popular and famous in Rio, practice routines for the festival. They perform the Samba and the "alas" (wings) to the music of the school's band. The festival attracts thousands of people including many overseas visitors. Besides dancing, the festival is also famous for its exotic and expensive costumes, most of which incorporate vast amounts of ostrich feathers and sequins.
