In the final game of the Suntory Ball Tournament in Tokyo on December 23, which brought three top U.S. college basketball teams in a round-robin contest, North Carolina's high-scoring aces overwhelmed Arizona State University by the lopsided score of 85-66. The taller North Carolina five jumped to an 11-2 lead after just five minutes of play. Brad Daugherty (No. 42) a nineteen-year-old junior, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after netting 20 points in the game for North Carolina. Arizona State's Jim Deines led the Sun Devils with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Deines, along with Guard Ron Singleton, kept Arizona State within striking distance int the first half, but North Carolina's scoring juggernaut pulled away in the final period, piling on unstoppable pressure with deadly accurate free throws and long shots.
