Background: Cuban Prime Minster Fidel Castro arrived in East Berlin on Tuesday (13 June) for an eight-day visit to east Germany as part of his East European tour. This is the fifth country visited on his six-week tour of Warsaw Pact countries.

Dr, Castro flew into East Berlin's Scheenefeld Airport in a Soviet-built Ilyushin-18 turbo-prop aircraft of Cuban airlines. Emerging from the aircraft in his usual military coat and cap, he was embraced by East German Communist Party Chief Reich Honecker and Prime Minister Willi Stoph.

After shaking hands with officials of the Politburo, Parliament and Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Castro reviewed the guard of honour. He then met the diplomatic community and exchanged greetings with a crowd of Cubans working or studying in East Germany.

Later in the day Dr. Castro and his delegation met Communist Party Chief Erich Honecker and other East German leaders including Head of State Walter Ulbricht, Premier Willi Stoph and Foreign Minister Otto Winzer for what the East German News Agency described as official negotiations.

Following his visit to East Germany, the Cuban leader is due to leave for Prague and then to Moscow on the last leg of his seven-nation tour.
