Background: OLYMPIC ATHLETES HAD A FORETASTE OF MEXICO CITY ALTITUDES DURING THE KENYAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NAIROBI ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. IN THE MILE EVENT KENYA'S KIPCHOGE KEINO HAD A CONVINCING WIN.

MOST OF THE OVERSEAS RUNNERS TAKING PART IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS FOUND THEIR PERFORMANCES ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY THE HIGH ALTITUDES. THE CITY IS ONLY ABOUT 1,000 FEET (300 METRES) BELOW THE ALTITUDE OF MEXICO CITY, WHERE THE 1968 OLYMPIC GAMES WILL BE HELD.

BRITAIN'S ALAN SIMPSON CLOCKED 4 MINS. 19.2 SECS IN THE MILE ON SATURDAY. HE SAID LATER: "THIS IS THE SLOWEST MILE I'VE EVER DONE. I COULD FIND NO COORDINATION BETWEEN MY MIND AND MY LEGS, AND I WAS FORCED TO GASP FOR AIR."
SIMPSON CAME EIGHTH TO KEINO, WHO WON THE RACE IN A TIME OF 3 MIN 59.5 SECS. KEINO, UNTROUBLED BY THE ALTITUDE, LED THROUGHOUT THE RACE.

A KENYAN, NAFTALI TEMU, WON THE SIX-MILE RACE, SETTING A NEW KENYA OPEN AND EAST AFRICAN RECORD OF 28 MINUTES 16.3 SECS. LAJOS MECSER OF HUNGARY ALSO SUCCUMBED TO THE EFFECTS OF ALTITUDE AND FAILED TO TAKE A PLACE IN THE RACE.

THERE WAS ANOTHER VICTORY FOR NAFTALI TEMU IN THE THREE-MILE RACE, WITH A TIME OF 13 MINUTES 33.8 SECS. ALAN RUSHMER OF GREAT BRITAIN CAME SIXTH IN THE EVENT.
