Background: Holland, runners-up in the 1974 World Cup football competition, played England on Wednesday (9 February) in a friendly international match at Wembley in London. The game was one of a series England are playing as a warm-up to their World Cup qualifying matches.
SYNOPSIS: In the Dutch team in the dark shirts were seven members of the team who were beaten in the World Cup final by West Germany. Almost from the start the Dutch side showed too much skill for the England players who sometimes resorted to crude methods - like this foul on Dutch star Johann Cruyff.
New cap, Jan Peters opened the score for Holland in the 29th minute when he put the ball past Ray Clemence. the visitors continued to attack and only eight minutes later Peters scored his second goal.
The visitors dominated play, especially in midfield and their defenders Suurbier and Krol were able to take up attacking positions. England tried to reduce the Dutch lead, but good defence and some poor play from the England forwards prevented them scoring.
England had suffered an early blow when midfield player Brian Greenhof was forced to leave the field through injury. His replacement, Colin Todd, was not as effective as Greenhof, who had been one of the few England players to shine in the match.
The Dutch team combined fast running and excellent ball handling skills to give England little opportunity for rest. There were only a few occasions when Dutch goalkeeper Piet Schrijvers, was forced into action. England's Ray Clemence was the much busier player.
Mike Doyle put the ball in the Dutch net once, but the goal was disallowed. At the end the 90,000 crowd applauded the Dutch team after booing the home side. Final score....England, nil, Holland two.
