Background: The Lebanese army took over leftist Moslem militia positions facing the Israelis in the southern sector of West Beirut - a move which averted a potential serious clash. The army moved between the two sides in the coastal Ouzai region. In neighbouring Bir Hassan, and along the main airport road, the Israelis had threatened to attack the Amal (Shi'ite) and Arab Socialist Union militiamen, unless they withdraw. But even after they had abandoned their positions in the Lebanese army there was no sign of any Israeli pullback.
