Background: A Chinese parliamentary delegation headed by Mrs Deng Yingchao, the widow of the former Chinese Prime Minister, Mr Chou En-lai, arrived in Paris on Monday (9 June) for a week-long visit.

SYNOPSIS: The delegation was invited to France by the Chairman of the French National Assembly, Mr Jacques Chaban-Delmas. It was met by the Assembly's Assistant Deputy President, Mr Andre Delehedde.

Replying to Mr Delehedde's welcoming speech, Mrs Deng said the world was seeing increasing co-operation between France and China. She said the countries of western Europe were taking on an added importance for China. It is the first time that a Chinese delegation of such a high level has visited France and the visit is seen as signifying the importance which China attaches to relations with France.

Mrs Deng currently is very popular in China and has been associated with the Chinese Communist Party since its inception. She led student agitation in China, before marrying Chou En-lai in 1925. She was at his side for the Long March, the Chinese civil war and the formation of the People's Republic. In 1977 Mrs Deng was appointed a vice-president of the National People's Assembly, and two years ago she was made a member of the party's political bureau.
