Background: Christmas lights were turned on in London's Regent Street tonight (Wednesday) -- the colourful decorations have become a feature of the festive season.
The Duchess of Bedford threw the switch which set alight nearly four thousand bulbs. Regent street is at the heart of London's West End commercial and entertainment area. The designer of this year's decorations says it's intended to convey the feeling of a traditional Christmas as distinct from the more abstract design last year.
The theme this year - "a regency Christmas" - to suggest the 18th Century when Regent street acquired it's distinctive shops and offices.
