Background: A South African Invitation XI -- which included a black cricketer -- beat the touring Derrick Robins side by 55 runs in a limited over one day game at the Newlands, Cape Town, on Wednesday (28 January).
The black cricketer, Sam Sonwabe, played alongside South Africa's cricketing greats like Eddie Barlow, Barry Richards and Graeme Pollock .. who are all white.
Sonwabe's contribution to the exiting game was an undefeated innings of 10 runs and some excellent fielding.
His place on the otherwise all white South African line-up was regarded as a breakthrough for black cricketers who rarely get the chance to play against top international sides.
The Invitation XI batted first on a wicket what was showing some signs of life and openers Richards and David Dyer gave their side a great start with a partnership of 91 before Richards was out for 56.
Graeme Pollock kept up the good work with a sparkling 61 in 86 minutes before he was bowled.
The home side scored 219 runs for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of their 60 overs.
The tourists were disappointing except for some fine batting by Englishman David Hayes (40) and Australian Trevor Chappell (41) .. the younger brother of Ian and Greg Chappell.
They were eventually all out for 164 .. the last wicket falling with four half overs left to play.
