Background: Australia's Miss. Evonne Goolagong crushed Miss. Virginia Wade of Britain 6-3, 6-3 in their single's quarter final at Wimbledon, England, on Monday (July 2nd).
Miss. Goolagong turned on an almost perfect display of power tennis to beat Miss. Wade, who has a reputation for playing badly in front of her home crowd.
The first set was decided in 24 minutes after former Wimbledon champion Miss. Goolagong had taken a 5-1 lead. She then faltered for almost the only time in the match when she served a double fault in the seventh game to allow the british girl to break back.
But the Australian finished the set with a love game.
In the second set Miss. Goolagong got the service break in the seventh came to take a 4-3 lead. She healthier own service and then broke Miss. Wade's service again to win the match in under the hour.
Miss. Goolagong will meet the defending champion Mrs. Billie Jean King of the United States in the semi finals on Wednesday (July 4).
SYNOPSIS: At Wimbledon on Monday, Australia's Miss. Evonne Goolagong, serves at the start of her quarter final match against Miss. Virginia Wade of Britain.
Miss. Goolagong is number three seed and a former Wimbledon champion. Virginia Wade has a reputation for playing badly before her home crowd--and has never got beyond the Wimbledon quarter finals. With accurate power tennis Miss. Goolagong swept to a five-one lead in the first set.
Facing the loss of the first set, Miss. Wade, number six seed, produced defiant play.
After as long rally she broke Miss. Goolagong's service to make the score two-five.
Miss. Wade held her own serve but then faced Miss. Goolagong's service.
Miss. Goolagong made a series of fins shots and finished the set with a love game.
Miss. Wade had little answer to her powerful play. The first set lasted only twenty-four minutes.
In the second set Miss. Goolagong broke her opponent's serve in the seventh game to take a four three lead. Again she held her service to leave Miss. Wade serving to try land save the match.
But Evonne Goolagong got her second service break of the set to win.
The match lasted less than an hour. She will play Mrs. Billie Jean King in the semi final.
