Background: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt said in Alexandria on Tuesday (26 July) that the armed conflict with the libyan Jamahiriyah was over and that he saw no need to formalise the truce. He added that the border clashes had concerned " a small patch of sand" and were ridiculous. He described Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi as a "clown". Mr Sadat was addressing a meeting at Alexandria University to mark the 25th anniversary of the departure into exile of the late King Farouk of Egypt, who was ousted on july 23, 1952.

SYNOPSIS: The Egyptians leader was in an amiable mood as he arrived at the Students' Union Club. He was greeted by professors and students and had a meal with them before his speech.
