Background: President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, were the major speakers Thursday night in a nationwide fund-raising effort to finance the proposed National Cultural Center in Washington.
Dinners were held in 60 cities from coast to coast, with a closed circuit television hookup in which President and Mrs. Kennedy spoke. Then a galaxy of entertainment stars performed during the two-hour extravaganza.
The hope is to raise 30 million dollars for the cultural center.
In his speech, the President said that after the dust of history settles, the wars and political battles will be forgotten, but that the work of artists will endure and that art and the encouragement of art will earn the gratitude of mankind.
