    Background: PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR OF SENEGAL ARRIVED IN BATHURST, CAPITAL OF GAMBIA, LAST THURSDAY FOR A TWO-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT. THE PRESIDENT AND HIS PARTY WERE TO DISCUSS FUTURE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WITH THE GAMBIAN PRIME MINISTER MR. DAVID JAWARA.

    PRESIDENT SENGHOR WAS WELCOMED AT THE AIRPORT BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE GOVERNOR, SIR JOHN PAUL. FROM THE AIRPORT THERE WAS A STATE DRIVE INTO THE CAPITAL.

    AFTER THE TWO DAYS OF TALKS, AN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE WAS ISSUED, IN WHICH IT WAS SAID THE TWO COUNTRIES AGREED TO CO-ORDINATE THEIR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES, ESPECIALLY IN THE FIELD OF AGRICULTURE.

    SENEGAL AND THE BRITISH COLONY HAVE ALSO AGREED TO IMPROVE TRANSPORT AND TELECOMMUNICATION LINKS. THE TWO LEADERS ALSO NOTED THE NEED TO "EXTEND BILINGUALISM IN ORDER TO IMPROVE STILL FURTHER THE UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THEIR COUNTRIES".
