Background: French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, giving a further boost to the Anglo-French supersonic airliner Concorde, used the jetliner to fly high-speed from Paris to Kinshasa at the start of a three-day visit to Zaire yesterday (7 August).

The flight was accomplished in less than half the time taken by normal scheduled airliners.

It was the first visit by French President to the former Belgian colony, and it provoked great enthusiasm in Kinshasa. Zaire's President Mobutu and his wife greeted the French leader at the airport.

Later, both Presidents received a tumultuous reception from tens of thousands of people packed into Kinshasa's City Stadium. There President Giscard said that France was proposing that African countries, especially those culturally lined to France, should join in cooperation in devising development programmes.

France was not offering aid, he said, but sought solidarity between peoples -- while rejecting all kind of imperialism. Zaire, because of its rich natural resources, had a leading role to play in Africa, he added.

Talks between the two leaders were expected to concentrate on trade cooperation and the need for a more equitable world economic system. And in another speech, shortly after his arrival, President Giscard promised French participation in building a new world economic order, and called on developed nations to limit their desires and learn to share their wealth.
