INTRODUCTION: The annexation of the Golan Heights by Israel has led to world-wide protest, even in the Jewish state itself. In Tel Aviv, a demonstration organised by a Kibbutz and a labour-aligned political party attracted over ten thousand people.

SYNOPSIS: Since Israel announced the annexation of the Golan Heights, protests have been staged by Arabs. But in Tel Aviv on Saturday (19 December) a large-scale protest was held by Israelis.Demonstrators called for Zionism without annexation and some held banner which warned that dictatorship was on the way.Various speakers addressed the crowd in Hebrew, and Defence Minister Ariel Sharon came in for criticism. The annexation had strained US-Israeli relations.

Demonstrators distributed leaflets among the crowd which called for Israel to think again about their action.Since the annexation, Israeli leader, Menachem Begin has attacked the US punitive measures which involved suspending the new strategic co-operation treaty between the two countries. The last speaker to address the huge crowd, was Victor Shemtov, a member of the Knesset (parliament). He said the demonstration expressed the cry of thousands who were worried about the dangerous situation in the Golan Heights. He added that the Israeli government's action would hurt the chances of peace with Syria, Jordan and the Palestinians. He also said that the action had created internal tension in the country.
