Background: The Australian racing driver, Alan Jones. won the European Formula 5000 Championship in brilliant, convincing manner on Sunday (28 September).
The 28-year old Australian led throughout the 25 lap event in his V-6 March Ford.
British drivers David Purley and Guy Edwards took second and third place respectively.
The win by Jones still leaves him virtually out of the running for the European title, but his victory did leave the other five championship contenders separated by only 14 points.
With only three rounds of championship racing left, this makes it one of the closest competitions for the title since the formula was introduced eight years ago.
