Background: Athletics --and at the Third African Games being held in algiers, the prestige 10,000 metres event has been won by the Kenyan star Henry Rono.
SYNOPSIS: Henry Rono - Number 353 - is the world record holder for the ten thousand metres.
Rono led from the start. The crowd had been eagerly looking forward to the event and the clash between Rono and Ethiopian start, Miruts Yifter.
At the two thousand metre mark Rono started to lap the back markers among the other 23 competitors. However Rono and Miruts Yifter did not eventuate. Failing to match Rono's pace, he retired halfway through the race. Fellow Kenyan Michael Musyoki led Rono twice over the last three thousand metres.
Rono still had enough left for a final burst of speed over the final lap to finish 20 metres ahead of Musyoki. Mohammed Keder of Ethiopia came third.
Rono's next race was to be the three thousand metres on Tuesday (25 July).
