Background: Tigresses are notoriously difficult mothers and it is very few Zoos who have had any success with the breeding of these animals, nor do we know of anyone, who has raised four Tiger cubs on a bottle without the aid of the Tigress.
Now, from our advantage point of eight weeks, we feel sufficiently confident that the critical stage has been passed and the future of the cubs is reasonably assured. Therefore we have decided to place them on view to the public from Saturday 20th December, every afternoon between the hours of 2.30 and 4.30 p.m.
The cubs will be seen in a specially constructed enclosure of glass, which gives ideal facilities for viewing and maximum protection to the cubs. Infra red heating is overhead to keep them warm.
At this Press Conference, Mrs. D. B. Gilmore, wife of the President of the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland, has kindly consented to name the Tiger cubs, "Conn", "Finn", "Isolda" and "Grainne"; these historical Irish names have been chosen because of their regal nature which we feel is in keeping with Ireland's first Tiger Cubs.
As a small token of appreciation to the Collie owners, each will be given an album, containing many of the press photographs taken to date.
It will be remembered that when the Tigress "Arja" refused to look after her cubs, a Radio appeal was made by the Superintendent for foster mother sheep dogs and almost immediately a response was received from a great number of persons all over Ireland. Wooly and Flossy were chosen as the most suitable mothers for nursing the cubs, who were bottle fed by the Zoo Staff every three hours day and night.
At birth the cubs weighted:-
Conn 3 lbs now weighs 12 lbs 10 ozs.
Grainne 2 lbs 8 ozs " " 13 lbs.
Finn 2 lbs 15 ozs " " 14 lbs. 8 ozs.
Isolda 2 lbs 4 ozs " " 12 lbs 2 ozs.
