Background: Briton Mike Wilson, taking full advantage of his number one grid position, scored a straight win in the 35-lap Hong Kong International Kart Grand Prix on November 25, piloting his Birel/Parilla machine to victory in a fast time of twenty-two minutes thirty seconds. The current world champion, Danish driver Jorn Haase, fought hard to retain his title, but still finished over five seconds behind Wilson to take second place. Third was Peter de Bruyn of the Netherlands. At the end of the 29th lap, disaster struck the race when two karts clipped each other's wheels, flipping both karts and their drivers into the air. A third driver, following close behind, was unable to swerve or stop in time, smashing into the other two vehicles and knocking all three out of the race. Wilson's prize was worth thirty thousand Hong Kong dollars (3,700 U.S. dollars), as well as a commemorative trophy. He said after the race that he hoped to defend his title next year.
