Background: Former Egyptian chief of staff Saadeddein Shazli has accused classes in Egypt between Moslems and Christians. Lieutenant-General Shazli told a news conference in Beirut, Lebanon, on Wednesday (2 April) that the aim of his newly formed Egyptian opposition front was to get Egypt back into the Arab fold. The general announced the formation of an Egyptian National Front in Exile last week (27 March) which would cooperate with opposition inside Egypt to overthrow President Anwar Sadat's government.

SYNOPSIS: Joining General Shazli at the news conference was Abu Iyad, the Palestinian leader of Fatah, who said he welcomed the formation of the Front. He agreed with its aims which are said to be the creation of a democratic parliamentary regime in Egypt which would revoke the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty and liberate the occupied territories. The Front also wants the creation of a Palestinian state and the repudiation of all laws that restrict freedom.

General Shazli told the conference that President Sadat was responsible for the recent confrontations between Moslems and Coptic Christians. He said that if demonstrations were allowed in Egypt, then public opinion would overthrow Sadat. If that was not successful he said, "we shall resort to revolutionary violence to topple him". The General then criticised the United States for supplying arms to Israel.

General Shazli who was dismissed from his post as Egyptian Chief of Staff after the Arab-Israeli war of 1973, says the Front is open for all Egyptians to join.
