ASPELL: "Mr. President, how do you see the role of Archbishop Makarias in the future of Cyprus?"

CLERIDES: "well, it is not for me to say what the role of the President - Archbishop Makarios - would be in Cyprus in the future. He still has three years to run before his tarm of office is over. Whether after that period he will decide to retire from politics and remain in church affairs is, of course, for him and the people of Cyprus to decide."

ASPELL: "Has he been in contact with you towards the aim of returning to Cyprus?"

CLERIDES: "He has been in regular contact with me. We had long conversation last Saturday after the resolution of the Security Council."

ASPELL: "In your opinion, would it be a good thing for Cyprus if he was to return?"

CLERIDES: "I do not thing the question of his returning or not could be examined from the point of view whether it would be a good or a bad thing. The question is whether he is returning and what policy should we follow when he returns to Cyprus."

    ASPELL: "Mr. President, Thank you."

Archbishop Makarios -- who fled Cyprus after last April's coup -- had said he will return to Cyprus as President "even if it means putting my life at stake."
Newsman Tom Aspell spoke to Mr. Clerides about the possible return of Archbishop Makarios as President of Cyprus. A transcript follows:
