Background: In Pakistan, the world's biggest mosque has undergone a change of name - even before it is completed. The mosque, in Islamabad, was called the Shah Faisal Masjid (mosque), but now the world Shah has been dropped.

SYNOPSIS: The huge mosque, which has been under construction for several years, is being financed entirely by Saudi Arabia. The mosque is seen as a great status symbol in Pakistan, which, under General Muhammad Lia-ul-Haq, has reverted to strict Islamic laws. Pakistan recently hosted the Islamic Foreign Ministers Conference in Islamabad and when delegates visited the construction site, the change of name suggested.

The pyramid-shaped foundation stone was laid in 1976 by King Khaled of Saudi Arabia. It was dedicated to King Faisal.

But workmen have removed the word Shah from the foundation stone. However, the stone, which now simply refers to the Faisal Mosque, still shows the scars of the workman's drill. It is expected to be two years before the mosque is completed.
