Background: President Juan Peron of Argentina arrived in Asuncion Harbour in Paraguay aboard an Argentine minesweeper on Thursday (6 June), at the start of a one day official visit to Paraguay. The river Paraguay forms the border between the two countries, and the vessel had brought General Peron across the river from the Argentine bank to Asuncion.
He was greeted by the President of Paraguay, Alfredo Stroessner, who is also a General in his country's army. During the short visit, President Peron awarded President Strcessner the highest rank in the Argentine Army, that of Honorary Lieutenant-General. In 1954, during his previous term as Argentine's President, General Peron had been given the honour of being made an honorary General in the Paraguayan Army.
The Paraguayan Government paid him the honour in gratitude for the return of trophies captured by Argentina during the War of Triple Alliance in 1864, in which Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay had fought Paraguay.
After the welcoming ceremony, the two Presidents had discussions lasting half-an-hour. An official spokesman said afterwards that they had concentrated their talks on trade developments between their two countries.
President Peron's visit to Paraguay was only his second trip abroad since he returned to office last October. His only other excursion outside Argentina since then was to Uruguay.
