    Background: MOSCOW, U.S.S.R./WASHINGTON, U.S.A.

INTRODUCTION: The hunger strike by Soviet dissident Dr. Andrei Sakharov and his wife appears to be over. This was stated in Moscow on Wednesday (9 December) by Dr. Sakharov's daughter in law, Miss Liza Alexeyeva. She said she had been contacted by KGB security police and told she would be allowed to go to the United States. And they told her the Sakharov's had called off their fast. It was for Miss Alexeyeva's right to emigrate that the Sakharovs began their hunger strike 17 days ago. But scepticism over the KGB's statement has already been expressed, both in Washington, by Miss Alexeyev's husband-by-proxy, Alexei Semyonov, and in Moscow by Miss Alexeyeva herself.

SYNOPSIS: Miss Alexeyeva told reporters the announcement came after a 20-minute meeting with KGB officer Alexander Baronov. He told her she would be free to go to the United States. He also told her that Dr. Sakharov and his wife had called off their hunger strike in the Urals city of Gorki.

But, she said, there had been no formal confirmation of the news. She said she had telephoned the emigration authorities and they knew nothing of a decision to grant her a visa. She added she was advised against speaking to foreign journalists and the speed of her departure would be governed by her frequency of contact with foreigners. In Washington, Alexei Semyonov, was also sceptical.
