Background: Yugoslavia's handball team set a new world record when they defeated Luxembourg by the massive margin of 54-13 in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, on Saturday (8 November). The match was a qualifying game for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Luxembourg is not a weak side. Their team has beaten Belgium and Britain and drawn against Italy -- but against the Yugoslavs, one of the best sides in the world, they were completely overwhelmed.

Eastern European sides have traditionally dominated handball but the game is now becoming popular in places like the Middle East and Scandinavia. It is similar to basketball but much faster. The ball does not have to be bounced but is thrown from player to player. Points are scored by throwing a ball through a goal like that of a football pitch rather than through a hoop as in basketball.

Yugoslavia won the handball gold medal in the last Olympic Games and came third in the recent World Championships. There were four Yugoslav players in a world team that beat West Germany last week and the side possibly contains the best individual players in the world.

Abas Arslanavic who is considered the best goalkeeper in the world also played for the world team. Fellow Yugoslav Hrvoye Hojat, a lawyer, who has played three times for the world team scored many of the points. Zvonomir Serdarusic also scored a large number of the record 54 points.
