Background: Passengers were trapped for nearly an hour in wrecked carriages, when the "Peach Queen" passenger train was derailed in the mountains near Seneca, South Carolina, USA, April 25. The conductor was killed and at least eleven passengers injured, some seriously.

The ten-car Washington to Atlanta train, powered by a diesel locomotive, ripped up rails and ties as nine carriages left the rails. Six were strung out like a twisted string of beads from the elevated road bed into a 50--feet ravine. Two cars, a Pullman and an express car, plunged to the bottom of the ravine.

Ambulances from nearby towns were soon on the scene. Spectators and crewmen helped chop away debris trapping passengers. The fire caused by the wreck spread to nearby woods, and for a while it seemed that rescuers would have to fight a forest fire. But the flames were quickly brought under control before they could seriously hamper rescue operations.
