Background: EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR WORLD-RENOWNED ARTIST PABLO PICASSO CONTINUED AT VALLAURIS, ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA, OCT 29. ALTHOUGH HE IS REPORTED TO DISLIKE CROWDS, HE JOINED IN THE SPIRIT OF THE TOWN'S "TRIBUTE" TO HIM. FIRST, HE CALLED IN AT A POTTERY CONTEST, AND SHOWED A KEEN INTEREST IN THIS OTHER BRANCH OF ART. PICASSO CHATTED WITH SOME OF THE POTTERS, AND CONGRATULATED THE WINNERS.

A MORE BOISTEROUS WELCOME AWAITED HIM AT THE NEARBY NEROLIUM HALL. AT AN EXHIBITION OF 27 PAINTINGS LENT BY HIS FRIENDS, THE STOCKY LITTLE ARTIST AND HIS WIFE (JACQUELINE) WERE AT TIMES CRUSHED AGAINST THE CANVASES. FIGHTS BROKE OUT AMONG THOSE TRAMPLED ON THE OUTSKIRTS - AND BLUE-UNIFORMED SECURITY MEN FORCED THEIR WAY INTO THE CROWD TO HUSTLE PICASSO AND PARTY OUT TO THEIR WAITING CARS.

IN THE AFTERNOON, HE ATTENDED A BULLFIGHT IN A RING THAT WAS OBVIOUSLY TOO SMALL FOR THE MILLING CROWDS. PICASSO WAS DRESSED IN A SNUFF-COLOURED VELVETEEN SUIT; AND HE WATCHED TWO SPANIARDS - LUIS DOMINGUIN AND DOMINGO ORTEGA - KILL TWO BULLS. DOMINGUIN, WHO TOOK ON THE FIRST, THREW HIS CAP TO PICASSO. IT WAS LATER RETURNED AS HE SUCCESSFULLY TRIUMPHED OVER THE ANIMAL. IN RETURN, DOMINGUIN PRESENTED PICASSO WITH THE BULL'S EARS.
