Background: The Olympic flame -- which will signal the start of the Munich Games on August 26 -- arrived in Istanbul on Monday(August 7).

The torch was carried into Istanbul's TAKSIM Square by fifty-four year old Turkish athlete, Riza Maksut --- formerly his country's fifteen-hundred metre champion.

The Presidents of both the Turkish and the German Olympic Committees watched a brief ceremony in which a big torch in the square was lit from the flame carried from Olympia in Greece.

All told, the flame will be carried nearly 3,500 miles(5,600 kms) to Munich by about 6,400 athletes from eight countries.
