Background: VISNEWS cameras filmed some of the many and varied exhibits during the opening day of the annual Leipzig International Trade Fair Mar 2.

Despite the political tension between East and West, the Fair continues to maintain, and even increase, its importance as a German trading ground. This year 9,380 exhibitors from 49 countries are represented.

While East Germany predominates with 6,351 exhibitors, the West contributes 2,839 exhibitors, with whom the East German regime hopes to negotiate trade deals totalling more than GBP59 million. Trade organizations from other East bloc countries number 190.

More than 60 exhibitors from Britain are represented in more that 2,500 square yards compared with Russia's 12,000 square yards of a characteristically huge pavilion, complete with 'sputniks'.

A member of the Soviet delegation to the Fair said that Russian Premier Kruschev is scheduled to arrive mar 3, and that he would not visit east Berlin or any other east German city during his three-day visit. He is expected to make a major speech in Leipzig's Central Stadium referring to Mr. Macmillan's Russian visit. Herr Ullbricht, the East German Communist leader, will also speak.
