Background: The organiser of the Paris to Dakar motor rally, Mr. Thierry Sabine, rejected newspaper criticism of this year's event at a press conference in the French capital on Wednesday (27 January). Three competitors died during the 10,000 kilometre (6,250 mile) rally and Mark Thatcher, son of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was lost for six days in the Algerian desert. M. Sabine said the event was open to all types of vehicle and the drivers knew the risks they were likely to encounter. He added that the race was an adventure in an age when adventures virtually no longer existed. He attacked the British press for concentrating on the disappearance of Mr. Thatcher who, he said, would be a doubtful acceptance for next year's rally. Mr. Sabine did acknowledge that the British driver had not himself criticised the race organisers.
