Background: South Africa's surf Lifesaving Association marked its Golden Jubilee Year on November 27 by starting a surf lifesaving competition between national teams from South Africa and the United States. The events, held at clifton Beach, Cape Town, began with a beachside parade by both teams. Contestants were entered in individual and team surfboarding races and four-man teams from each squad challenged the coastal surfing conditions by mounting rescues of swimming accident "victims". Watched by dozens of spectators the competitors had to launch their surfboards into the breakers, locate their "victims" and then race back to shore carrying the "body" on surfboard. The United States team, composed of professional lifeguards, narrowly edged out the South African "President's Team" in the first round with a score of 101 points to 97. the next round of team trials takes place on December 3.
