Background: INTRODUCTION: Sweden's tennis champion, Bjorn Borg on Tuesday (2 June) reached the semi-finals of the French Open. He will meet the Paraguayan player Victor Pecci. In the women's tournament, the American Chris Evert-Lloyd is also through to the semi finals, where she will compete against Czech player, Hana Mandlikova.
SYNOPSIS: Bjorn Borg's powerful game dispelled any fears that the shoulder injury which disrupted his training for this match would harm his play. His victory was thorough. After losing his first service game he never looked back, winning point after point.
His opponent, Hungarian Balazs Taroczy, was seeded 15th in the tournament. Taroczy, nearer the camera, was no match for the hard-serving Swede with his long drives and his fast, looping top spin. Borg took just over two hours to win 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.
Borg has won the French Open five times before, and on this evidence, seems to have a good chance of winning again. But first he must avenge Pecci's victory at Monte Carlo in April.
In the women's events, Chris Evert Lloyd was pitted against the Romanian player Virginia Ruzici, who was French Open Champion in 1978. Lloyd who has won the championship four times, at first had to struggle to compete with the Romanian's superior height and reach. Ruzici is nearer the camera.
But in the end, Lloyd got the win through dogged determination. After one serve was called out, she produced another, which led to victory. She will play the Czechoslovakian Hana Mandlikova, for a berth in the final.
