Background: "You know, I went to the department of labour about this election. As a matter of fact I went three times and I told them that Mr. Yablonski could not win the election. Impossible. Unless the federal government intervened and counted the ballots. And L said further, 'You say to me you cannot intervene until something has happened that will show that there is fraud in the election.' And I said, 'Would you hang a man and then call a doctor?' That's exactly what you're doing with Mr. Yablonski because you're risking his life. My reasoning was that basically had he von the election, no one would touch him because the finger would point in one direction. Had he lost the election, which he did, you know what happened and I know what happened. It, to me, is a case of the Federal government not wanting to get involved. It was, to me, the fact that the big interests really didn't want Mr. Yablonski as president of the united mine workers and they used their force to see that the department of labour did not intervene. You've got to remember that Mr. Yablonski did one service for the coal miners of this country. That was specifically that he was trying within the union to elevate their social-economic status. And whenever you chip the establishment...I'm getting to wonder if it's possible to live. (1:46)
