TRANSCRIPT: AMUNDSON: The fifth-placed Chicago Cubs damaged St. Louis's chances of overtaking the leaders in the National League Eastern Division on Wednesday by putting down the Cardinal's seven to five. The Cardinals are in second place behind Pittsburgh. Chicago is away back....but Charles Amundson reports that they still beat St. Louis decisively.
The cubs led one to nothing in the first when a single by Jose Cardinal and some shoddy fielding led to another run. Cardinals's popfly landed in front of rightfielder Reggie Smith and Smith's throw to the infield went over Ran Fairly at first and through Ted Simmons at home. The error allowed Champ Summers to score. Cub rookie Joe Wallace hit triples his first two times at bat. This shot to rightcentre in the third scored Don Kessinger and offset a homerun by the Cardinal's Ken Reese. Wallace is just up from the minors and is playing in replace of the injured Rick Monday. Andy Thornton made it six-one Cubs with a two-run homer in third. Thornton had been platooned at first base most of the season and he's been swinging a hot bat since he was given the job full time. But St. Louis played long ball, too. Pinchhitter Keith Hernandez brought his team to within a run when he hit one out with two men on in the fourth. That was all for Cub started Steve Stone but relief pitchers worked out of some jams to hold the lead. This is Charles Amundson reporting.

Background: The Chicago Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 in Chicago on Wednesday (10 September) on the strength of some good hitting by some new men in the lineup.
Rookie Joe Wallace hit two triples, one in the third inning which evened the score after the Cardinal's Ken Reese had homered earlier. Later in the inning Andy Thornton, who had been playing part-time first base most of the season and only recently nailed down the full-time assignment, blasted a two-run homer putting the Cubs out front 6-1.
In the next inning, Cardinal pinch hitter Keith Hernandez knocked one out of the park to narrow the gap but Chicago held on to the lead and went on to win the game.
The scoring had got under way quickly, with the Cubs jumping to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jose Cardinal??? blooped one to right field but rightfielder Reggie Jackson's throw got past first baseman Ron Fairly and catcher Red Simmons as well. Champ Summer scored on the play.
St. Louis is in second place in the National League Eastern Division.
