Background: The German Federal Interior Minister, Dr. Gerhard Schroeder, representing Federal Chancellor, Dr. Konrad Adenauer, yesterday July 20, attended a ceremony in West Berlin marking the 14th anniversary of the attempt by a group of German Army officers to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his Nasi regime.
The ceremony took place before the Stauffenberg statue in the courtyard of the former German Armed Forces' Headquarters. Stauffenberg was the German officer who placed a brief-case containing a time bomb at the foot of a heavy oak conference table at which Hitler was studying a map with high-ranking Nasi officers.
Stauffenberg than left. The table shielded Hitler when the bomb exploded. Some of his aides died outright.
Hitler's Cestapo - the German Secret Police - uncovered the conspiracy almost as soon as the dust cleared. Among the plotters discovered aiming at the Fuehrer's downfall was Rommel, one of Germany's most brilliant soldiers who had fought for him in the Western Desert of North Africa with the skill of a desert fox.
As the Gestapo arrested and executed the conspirators, Rommel, taking his life in his hands, swallowed poison.
Widows and relatives of the executed wept at the ceremony.
