Background: THE JAPANESE FISHING VESSEL, "SHAMSHA MARU" SURPRISED AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS AND QUARANTINE OFFICIALS LAST WEEK WHEN SHE BERTHED AT FREMANTLE WITH EIGHT LIVELY MONKEYS ON BOARD.

GRINNING BROADLY, THE JAPANESE FISHERMEN DECLARED THE MONKEYS TO THE CUSTOMS MEN ALONG WITH CIGARETTES, CAMERAS, AND OTHER POSSESSIONS.

A FIFTY POUND BOND WAS REQUIRED FOR EACH OF THE MONKEYS IF BROUGHT ASHORE. THE JAPANESE BOUGHT THEM IN SINGAPORE AND WILL SELL THEM IN JAPAN AS PETS.

THE "STATE OF KUTCH", ALSO BEPTHED IN THE HARBOUR, HAD A GREATER VARIETY OF ANIMALS ON BOARD. THE KANGAROOS ARE A GIFT FROM THE SOUTH PERTH ZOO TO THE CEYLON ZOO.

THE SHIPS CARGO ALSO INCLUDED DOMESTIC ANIMALS ..... THIS TROTTER FOR SINGAPORE, AND THIRTY HEAD OF FRIESIAN CATTLE WORTH ABOUT NINE-THOUSAND AUSTRALIAN POUNDS.

THE CATTLE ARE A GIFT TO THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT.
