Background: In the bay of Izmit,
Turkey, scene of the waterspout storm that capsized a ferry boat carrying 600
passengers, naval divers continued their search of the sunken vessel for
bodies.

For two days, since Saturday, 1st, March, day of the catastrophe, the divers
have explored the wreck and retrieved 140 bodies, among them many children and
women. As far as can be made out there are at least a further 100 bodies
remaining in the boat, whilst daily, bodies are being washed up on the shore
around the bay.

Official sources put the number of survivors at 40, and there is little hope of
this figure rising. The reason for so few people escaping death is that the
freak storm caused the ferry boat to sink in a matter of minutes, giving the
crew no chance at all of launching the life-boats. Added to this was the fury of
the sea, whipped up by the storm, which hindered the small fishing boats
attempting to reach the striken vessel.

Mass funerals have taken place in and around Izmit for the victims, and many
thousands congregated at the largest mosque in the town to pray for the dead.

Military bands have preceeded the funeral processions, and townsfolk, statesmen
and military personnel have joined the corteges.

On Monday, 3rd. March, the Turkish President's general secretary and first
aide-de-campe, headed on such procession. The latter was in uniform. Behind them
were cabinet ministers and other mourners who carried the nine coffins that were
decorated with flags and, in some instances, photographs of the deceased.

An act of homage was paid to the victims on Monday, 3rd. March, by the Prime
Minister, Andan Menderes, when in the late afternoon he went to the vicinity of
the disaster and casted a wreath on the now calm seas.
